Helsby FC under 9’s play first International match
Helsby under 9’s were invited to play a match against a team of 10-12 year olds from the Premier India Football Academy (PIFA). The children were attending a football camp at Vauxhall‘s social club organised by Inspire. The boys were here for a week and had already visited Liverpool’s stadium Anfield and Manchester United’s Old Trafford, as well as having attended a match at Everton. Helsby FC under 9’s arranged to play a match against the PIFA team at Vauxhall’s social club at 6.30pm on Thursday 6th May. Little did we know we had a Prince of India participating in the team!!
At first Helsby seemed a bit apprehensive as the PIFA team were considerably taller and obviously older than our boys, but then we took an early lead to make it 1 nil. The PIFA team passed the ball majestically and continued to press for the equaliser, but the game ended at one nil to Helsby. All the players lined up and hands were shook and cheers were heard from both teams. The match was played in a fantastic spirit with cheers and clapping coming from both sides of the pitch. The game had been so enjoyable that one of the younger boys from the PIFA team asked if Helsby would play a further 10 minutes - we agreed and the teams took to the pitch again.
This time it was the PIFA team pressing all the time looking for a goal, and with three minutes to go they got a well deserved equaliser! What a celebration! The scorer was mobbed and the whole team dove on top of each other! Even some of our players joined in with the celebrations.
It was a fantastic evening, absolutely brilliant and an advert of what football is all about. It was certainly an evening that none of our players will ever forget. Photos by Heather Tilston http://www.fotofusion.org.uk)

Helsby Rises to t he Success of Sport Relief
Over 200 local people turned out in force on Sunday 21st March at the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Helsby and 10 Bridge Mile hosted at the Helsby Community Sports Club. Milers of all ages rose to the challenge and were sponsored to do one, three or six miles for Sport Relief.
The day was a massive success with friends, families and work mates joining together in friendly rivalry to rise to the challenge. Terry Samuels from the 10 Bridge Clinic hosted a mass roof top warm up session with the Chester Goddess Cheerleaders, before Alan Gardiner, Chair of Helsby Parish Council got the event underway.
All the money raised here in Helsby and nationally will help transform lives here in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries. Thousands of people across the whole of the UK took part in over 300 Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Miles. For the first time, the Mile went global, with a special Mile in South Africa. Here’s to the 2012 event. At the time of going publishing this article the final totals were not in, but already over £30million has been raised. The ever increasing total can be checked out at www.sportrelief.com.
Though the event was for fun we did record some results in the three and six mile event. Daniel Swaby was first across the line in the three mile event, followed by John Gill. In the six mile event Chris Jennings was the first six miler home, closely followed by 11 year old James Knipe who attends Helsby Hillside Primary, with Chris Milliken finishing in third place. Rachael Browes from the 10 Bridge Clinic was the first female six miler home. Well done and thank you to everyone who took part. Enjoy our pictures below from the event.
Drink to the success of the Helsby Beer festival
The 1st Helsby Be er Festival took place on 12 and 13 of March at the Helsby Community Sports Club, and what a great sell-out success it was. Over 22 barrels of golden ales, bitters, milds, lagers, stouts, ciders and perrys were drank, along with reserve supplies that had to be called in due to the insatiable thirst of the 600 or so visitors. Many of beers were sourced from the Northwest area, with just a few exceptions from further afield, including the beer of the festival ‘trashy blonde’ from Aberdeenshire.
Local group, Acoustic Juice, provided fantastic ente rtainment on both the Friday and Saturday evening, to the festival goers who had come from far and wide.
Frodsham Brewery launched their ‘Iron Man’ beer at the event, which has been especially brewed for Helsby and named to reflect the village’s Iron Age history.
Developm ent Officer, Michelle Pickstock said `We`ve had so many people telling us how much they enjoyed the laid-back, friendly and easy-going feel to the event ... and they liked the ales too, given that they literally drank us dry.` Stuart Wilkinson, Chair and event organiser, commented, `This was our first beer festival and we have had so much positive feedback from people. Some people thought we were being ambitious with the amount of beer we ordered and yet there was not a drop to spare, so next time we know we can confidently increase the amount.” Stuart continues, “We must thank all the volunteers who helped before and during the event. We also have to thank the musicians, local businesses who gave us their support to make the festival happen. This was our first festival, it won`t be our last and the best is yet to come.`
Disappointment Over Planning Delay
Helsby Community Sports Club are disappointed that our redevelopment Planning Application was unable to be submitted to the Strategic Planning Committee in August as was orginally planned, due to Cheshire West and Chester Council wanting to appoint a Consultant to assess the plans, but we do welcome Cheshire West and Chester Council taking an interest in our application and hope that we can successfully move forward soon.
RSK Pledge
Helsby based company RSK have offered to make a monthly contribution towards our Development Officer’s salary. The position was originally part funded by a grant from Frodsham Forward and matched by the club. Since the Frodsham Forward grant ended, Vale Royal Borough Council have also made a vital grant contribution. Dr Alan Ryder, Chairman of the RSK Group, said, “RSK is delighted to support Helsby’s new Community Sports Club and we shall encourage our local workforce of 100 people to use the facilities. Our business started 20 years ago and has now grown to be the UK’s largest privately owned environmental consultancy in the UK, but our headquarters remain firmly in Helsby.” He continues, “We are very pleased to play our part in the success of this vibrant, friendly and forward thinking community. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
The club are delighted with the kind contribution of RSK, which will allow the Redevelopment Project to continue in earnest..

Rural Delivery Programme Success
The Club`s redevelopment plans have got off to a flying start as we have recently learnt that we have been successful in our bid for £165,000 from the Rural Delivery Programme administered by Vale Royal Borough Council. The club are delighted that the hard work of so many people has now paid off. Club Chairman, Dave Healing said, `The club`s redevelopment is a golden opportunity for the village and surrounding areas. Successfully obtaining this grant will help us to go forward with our plans. We are a volunteer led organisation and many people have dedicated a lot of time and energy to both the club and securing this funding. In particular, I would like to thank Michelle Pickstock, George Randles and Terry O`Neill for all of their hardwork, and Councillor Alan McKie for his support.`
