The History of Helsby Community Sports Club
Helsby Community Sports Club is the former Sports & Social Club for workers of the village`s BICC factory. It has been in existence since the mid-20th Century and throughout it`s history has catered for a variety of different sports.
Since the early 1990`s the club has been independently run by it`s own membership, following BICC’s decision to scale down it`s operations in the village and cease it`s formal association with the club. For several years thereafter, the club then survived on only a short-term lease and as such was un able to secure the necessary external funding that was required to improve it`s now somewhat dilapidated clubhouse and facilities. That changed in 2003 when developers unveiled plans to redevelop the bulk of the former factory site. With help from the local Parish and Borough Council, a section 106 agreement was imposed upon the development, with the effect that the Borough Council ultimately acquired the site of the club. Upon completion of this agreement, the Borough Council then drew up a 35-year lease for the club, hence the club now has the necessary security of tenure it requires to bring in outside funding for the improvement of it`s clubhouse and facilities.
Coinciding with this, the club`s Executive Committee also looked inward as to how it could go about re-organising to best take advantage of this forthcoming opportunity. A Development Group was formed that also included representation from Parish and Borough Council, and the outcome was an ambitious Development plan which set out how the club envisaged growing it`s membership and improving it`s facilities. As a result, membership of the club grew rapidly in 2004 and 2005, with a significant increase occurring in the club`s junior membership. Total membership of the club currently stands at circa. 800 members, of which approximately 150+ are juniors. To assist the club in this development, external funding has been secured from a number of outside agencies, e.g. Primary Care Trust, local Partnership Frodsham Forward, SportsMatch, the LTA, plus several private businesses. Progress has also been aided by the club working in close partnership with several external bodies, e.g. both the local Parish and Borough Council, plus the relevant National Governing Bodies of each of the resident Sports clubs.
